The Commerce Department was formed under the new portfolio
of Tourism, Industry and Commerce in June 2001 and came into operation
in January 2002. As the Government’s link to the private sector
it has over the short time it has been in operation collaborated with
the private sector to promote and develop commercial activities in Guyana.
Objective
To develop an enabling business environment in Guyana.
Key Responsibilities
- Enhance the regulatory and legislative environment for business.
- Develop legislation and
set up necessary administrative bodies to enhance competition, and
establish a level playing field for commercial activity.
- Provide analysis of the domestic impact of proposed trade policies
and agreements, in support of participation in international trade
negotiations by the Ministry of Foreign
Trade and International Cooperation.
- Process applications for import and export licences
in a timely and efficient manner.
- Encourage the development of e-commerce
and e-business.
- Carry out analyses of domestic industries and markets to further
their development and to provide briefings for policymakers.
- To liaise with the private sector
in addressing issues dealing with trade and commerce.
- Process applications for Duty Free Concessions for hotels with not less than 15 rooms.
