The role of the Consumer Affairs Division is directly related to the
modus operandi of consumers in the business arena. It is geared towards
protecting their interests and realising a level of stability, integrity
and satisfaction to the lives of both vendors and consumers.
Functional
Areas
There are three functional areas incorporated in the Division’s
Mandate:
1. Legislation and Regulation
2. Consumer Education and Research
3. Pricing, Procurement and Distribution
Legislation and Regulation
This area is geared towards the establishment of laws
that govern the dealings between businesses and consumers; to protect
the rights of consumers, and further
provide avenues for redress where necessary.
Regulation in this sense revolves around the monitoring of goods and
service to ensure excellent standards. This is achieved in conjunction
with other Consumer Regulatory Agencies.
Consumer Education and Research
The fight against negativity in the marketplace can only be achieved
if consumers and vendors are informed on their rights and responsibilities
to self and others. In this light consumer education is a critical undertaking.
It is research that brings to light the consumer issues that exist
in this arena and from such, proper representation and diagnosis can
be made in an attempt to alleviate same.
Pricing, Procurement and Distribution
This is where the Division monitors the prices of essential items
and other commodities on the local market, for the purpose of projections
and consumer education; highlighting scarcities and making sure necessary
goods and services are available to consumers at affordable prices.
