Bamboo Craft
Training & Development

 

On 17th November 2003, the Ministry launched a bamboo training programme at the Bamboo Resource Centre located in the National Exhibition Centre Compound.

The project is a joint initiative between the Government of Guyana and the Government of the People’s Republic of China.

The objective of this training programme is to impact the skills of craft producers.The programme is offered free of cost to participants.

The Weaving Programme is conducted over a twelve (12) weeks period. This programme teaches participants the art of weaving small craft items using bamboo strips.

The Bamboo Furniture Programme is done over a six (6) months period. Persons are taught to produce furniture items example chairs, tables, and stools out of the bamboo material.

Emphasis is also placed on proper harvesting and preservation of the bamboo. The training caters for both urban and rural participants. Persons who are selected from the rural areas are provided with free boarding and lodging.

A total of fifty-five persons graduated from the 1st year’s programme. The 2nd year programme is currently in progress with twenty persons.
