The Department of Industry was first established in 1991 under the purview
of the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Industry. The major goal of this
new department was to promote industrial development. This initiative
has been broken up into a number of sub- programmes which are aimed at
supporting local as well as foreign investors in stimulating growth in
the economy.
The private sector has been deemed the “engine of growth”.
In order to stimulate investment the Department has to work in collaboration
or in partnership with the private sector to create this enabling environment.
Goal
Formulate, implement, evaluate, and improve industrial development
policies and programmes (syncronised with the requirements of industry)
aimed at the development of industries in Guyana
Diversification
of the Manufacturing Sector
The manufacturing sector in Guyana contributes about 5% to the Gross
Domestic Product (GDP). The sector provides employment for about twelve
(12%) percent of the population and has the potential to sustain rapid
growth and development of selected industries.
The emphasis of the Government is to promote diversification of the
production base moreover by encouraging expansion into non-traditional
sectors.
The major sub sectors covered under manufacturing include:
- Forestry which includes Timber and Non Timber products
- Seafood and Agro Processing
- Mineral-related Industries: gold, bauxite and koalin
- Textiles and Sewn Garments
- Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals
- Light Manufacturing including Metal fabrication, foundry and machine
works
- Printing and Packaging
- Warehousing
